If you are considering buying a dog or training services from Rentz Working Dogs of Wingate NC please know that they knowingly sold me a puppy with ringworm and have refused to honor their contract agreement to pay for the vet costs. I bought a puppy from Jeff Rentz and I noticed a small bald patch on the puppies hip. It was difficult to see because he is solid black and the fur around it conceals it. This is my second GSD and now that I know it is ringworm I feel like such a sucker for buying a dog with a bald spot, but I had puppy eyes I guess. Jeff wasn't home when I came to get the dog, but his wife was there to take care of it which was a little awkward. I asked her about the spot and she said it was just irritated from the concrete in the kennel and nothing to be concerned about and the hair would grow back once he was on a softer surface. Besides the bald spot he looked healthy so I accepted her explanation although I was concerned. After I got home I more closely examined the dog and I was surprised to see that the bald spot was more severe than it appeared. It was a completely bald circle 1.5 inches in diameter. It is in th corner of his hip so its hard to see. I got the impression his wife was just filling in so I called Jeff that evening to be certain. He had the same explanation and he went on to say that all the puppies in the litter had it and were examined by a vet. OK so now I felt a little better. After having the puppy for a few days, (3) I realized something was wrong because he was straining to urinate and having accidents more frequently than normal even for an unhouse trained puppy. Then I saw blood in his urine to confirm it. I spoke with Jeff and I went to the vet. He was diagnosed with a UTI and the vet suspected the bald spot was ring worm or a possible scar so we did a fungal test. I let Jeff know what was going on and he expressed is disagreement with the vets inclination. Well the test came positive. I asked him to send the vet records and his story changed. I guess he only had one dog in the litter examined to save money and it wasn't my particular dog. I sent Jeff an email describing our disappointment and requesting he pay the vet bills. He very quickly became difficult and responded that he would no longer speak to me on the phone for legal reasons. He oddly mentioned calluses on the puppies elbows and referred to them as the bald spot which was a cover up so he could deny his knowledge of the dogs condition. He then subsequently denied that the bald spot existed at the time of purchase and with that the multiple conversations I had with him and his wife about it. He said he wasn't liable because It was more than 72 hours before the dog was examined. I bought the dog on a Sat. and since vets are not open on the weekend it is unreasonable to expect me to get the dog examined with in that time frame. The dog was examined on Wed. and I have the vet notes describing the advanced scar like appearance of the bald spot discrediting his claims that it was a new condition. Jeff said he would take a look at the bills and make a decision. He has not yet responded and is ignoring my efforts to contact him via email and the phone. He did respond though to my inquiry about the AKC papers which shows hes screening my emails. To make matters worse my other dog now has ring worm. I'm sure I will get it to. I can't socialize the puppy or train my other dog because its contagious. I even compromised and asked him to only pay $100 for ring worm related expenses pertaining to the puppy because I can't prove the per-existing nature of the UTI and to be reasonable. In my experience Rentz Working Dogs has been dishonest, irresponsible, negligent in the care of their dogs, and worse in customer service than a used car salesman. If anyone is interested I will gladly support this accusation with email records and medical documents. I gave Jeff plenty of opportunities to reconcile this and I'm appalled by his unprofessional business practices. You would expect this from buying a puppy out of a truck bed a Walmart.
